FPC/Rockport Learns about Mental Health Awareness Month

As the PCUSA has named the month of May, Mental Health Awareness Month, First Presbyterian Church of Rockport dedicates one Sunday of the month to mental health and addiction awareness.

Our congregation is reminded that while the state of Texas is the second wealthiest state in the Union according to GDP, we consistently rank dead last or near last in terms of mental health and addiction treatment access and dollars set aside for treatment. According to a study done by UT Houston, 71%-73% of Texas children have no access to mental health treatment. Far too many adults in Texas can only receive "treatment" in our ER's or jails.

We were blessed to have Dr. Nacole Predum, newly hired Executive Director of ACCESS Counseling in Rockport bring us our message on Sunday, May 31st. With her leadership and guidance, and Kurt's involvement on their board of directors, we are bringing this awareness to the forefront of our church and community that we need to put more pressure on our elected officials, who are really the only ones who can address this problem on a large scale basis. We can't have health without mental health.
