Transitional General Presbyter

Over the last few days, I have attended the Mid Council Leaders Gathering, led by none other than our own, Rev. Dr. Sallie Watson. It was held in Louisville, Kentucky. However, due to flight chaos and cancellations, I decided to attend the conference online. At first, it felt strange not to be there in person. However, by Wednesday, the Holy Spirit tied together all the loose ends for me. Listening to the speakers, engaging in deep discussions, praying, singing, and doing the work of thinking and reflecting through the challenges and opportunities facing the church of Jesus Christ in the midst of this uncertainty, was invigorating. Remaining curious, nimble, prayerful, and trusting in God were some of the things I took away. In the end, I decided that I would commit to reflecting deeply on these matters using the lens of scriptures that follow the Revised Common Lectionary. This series of reflections will go on until Easter. If possible, I may continue even after Easter.

Standing Firm in the Shaking
The Jewish Temple during the time of Jesus was considered an awesome sight to see. The historian Josephus wrote about its immense size, opulent decoration with gold and silver, and complex structure, its porticoes, courts, and foundations. The disciples marveled at its huge stones. From a distance, the pilgrims saw the temple as a “mountain of snow” as it glittered in the sunlight. It must have been almost impossible for the pilgrims to consider its impending destruction. Yet, in the gospel passage, Jesus predicted its destruction. In his telling, everything is uncertain. Jesus does not promise us escape from trouble, destruction, and chaos. He promises us his presence even in the midst of suffering.
At Mission Presbytery, we know what it is like when trusted institutions shake. Declining numbers, shifting structures, anxious budgets. Yet Jesus says: Stand firm. Bear witness. Not a hair of your head will perish.
This is not a denial of reality. It is trust. The Spirit sustains us not by preventing change, but by walking through it with us. Our Mid Council Conference invited us to trust in what God is doing.
When temples crumble, God is building something new. Our call is not to cling to what was, but to trust the One who holds what will be.
Reflect: What feels uncertain in your ministry right now? How might the Spirit be inviting you to stand firm, not in fear, but in faith?
Prayer: God of endurance, when everything shakes, anchor us in your presence. Give us courage to witness, strength to persevere, and hope that cannot be shaken. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Risen Lord. Amen!
